Why not.

Massaman Lamb curry
Like pot roast, only it's friggin curry. God damn that was fantastic.

Homemade ravioli
Don't get me wrong, it's far better than anything you buy out of a freezer. But I know it can be done better. I've done a number of dough recipes over the years, but they never achieve greatness.

Asus 901
If the original EEE was a novelty, this thing is damn near a fully functional laptop. It runs photoshop and the battery life is 5-8 hours as tested by yours truly. Also features a built in webcam if you ever wondered how lethargic and beat you appear while surfing the web all evening.

Stay on target
My subconscious is a nice dude, but goddamn, he's so terrified of this world tour he had me convinced I had cancer earlier this year (because if I'm sick, I can stay here where it's safe). Christ, how do you people with actual life trauma not kill yourselves? And how does an atheist with an interest in evolutionary psychology even give a damn? And why did the shrooms have to kill god? What did I ever do to you, shrooms?

Anyway, I'm over my budget goal, the only remaining challenges are getting the car registered and sold (I'd rather dump it in the ocean at this point), talking to the boss, and saying goodbye. My flight is on Nov. 3 if you weren't taking notes.

Work
I earned my salary for the year over the past month, that's for sure. I've even enjoyed the debugging process along with taking RF chip designers with pHd's to task. At best, though, all my work means you get slightly longer battery life on your cell phone, except you won't, because that power budget will be spent on bloatware. Ugh, how do I not kill myself? I know, I know, I sometimes get laid, am not in an unhappy, sexless marriage, and am about to go touristing for a year. Cormack McCarthy taught me that having to deal with that $500 credit card bill is better than having to fight off dead baby eating cannibals on a daily basis. Go to bed.

Dude... by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #1 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 07:40:43 AM EST
I think your subconscious needs a bit of talking to, perhaps you can encourage it to look forward to the trip?

I guess I'm lucky, my subconscious is largely braver and tougher than my conscious.

Nov 3... let the countdown begin!

I got accepted to grad school and by ObviousTroll (4.00 / 2) #4 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 12:02:16 PM EST
the nightmares about not being qualified, about problems with my application, about missing required classes, the nightmares started that very night.

Has anybody seen my clue? I know I had it when I came in here.

it has mostly been dealt with by MillMan (4.00 / 1) #7 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 03:06:54 PM EST
Once I've gone through it, it won't be an issue again. It's always been this way for me. The cancer hypochondria was compounded by my getting older as well - new moles on my skin, new pains every few weeks in places I have never had them before that come and go, things like that.

When I'm imprisoned as an enemy combatant, will you blog about it?

Aches and pains.... by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #8 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 04:38:53 PM EST
Tell me about it... I went for a bike ride yesterday (no longer than usual) and in the evening I had these weird breathing troubles. Just out of the blue. Today, after the same ride... nothing.

the current job sounds better than the last one, right?

I have pretty high job satisfaction doing embedded digital design for military applications. Sure, I'd rather they be space robot applications, but until NASA calls (their job site is terrible), this will tide me over.

oh yeah, it beats the living hell out of the last one. My only wish is to find something less superficial.

ASUS 901 running photoshop by webwench (4.00 / 2) #3 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 09:22:48 AM EST
So you're using the XP version? It seems pretty stable? We want something like this that runs GPS routing software and Google Earth, and I had concerns about whether the newer eees would handle it.

Getting more attention than you since 1998. Ya ya!

XP, yes. Google earth with GPS shouldn't be an issue. I'm going to rig it up with a similar setup myself. The intel nano proc is pretty good. There are other mfg's coming out with similar products in short order (Dell, MSI, etc) as well.

IME PHd means SFA by MostlyHarmless (4.00 / 1) #9 Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 07:27:25 PM EST
we have a variety of levels of education here from partial college/university degrees to PHds. I've not seen any correlation between the level of education and competence.

It just means some of the PHd teach night courses at the local colleges on the side...

he's a borderline demi-god, but even demi-gods get things wrong, and don't completely understand my job due to their lack of ever doing it themselves.
